The Rise of Autonomous Vehicles

Tesla and Waymo both offer unique approaches to autonomous ride-hailing.

Tesla’s robotaxi model centers on a camera-based vision system and aims to upgrade existing vehicles with Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, allowing private owners to add their cars to a decentralized fleet. This approach avoids lidar technology and emphasizes scalability, hoping to reach Level 5 autonomy without additional infrastructure.

In contrast, Waymo employs a centralized fleet with a multi-sensor system that includes lidar, radar, and cameras, creating a 360-degree view for navigation. Waymo’s vehicles rely on detailed 3D maps and designated urban zones, making its model more infrastructure-dependent and limiting rapid expansion.

While Tesla aims to leverage its wide customer base and software for broad adaptability, Waymo focuses on controlled deployment in pre-mapped areas for a more dedicated, structured service.
